Fossil-free airport

Swedavia has adopted a climate roadmap that describes how Swedavia contributes to the climate transition. It includes both the transition of airport operations towards fossil-free airports, the joint work with airlines towards fossil-free flights, as well as collaborations and measures with, among others, suppliers to gradually achieve the goal of net zero emissions by 2050. Intermediate goals have been set every five years.

Fossil-free airport under Swedavia's management since 2020

Since the end of 2020, only fossil-free energy has been used in the airport operations run by Swedavia's own operations. In other words, everything that we ourselves have full control over.

  • Swedavia's direct emissions (scope 1), such as emissions from its own vehicles and machinery, backup power and emissions from fire drills, are fossil-free.
  • Swedavia's indirect emissions (scope 2) from purchased electricity and heat, where emissions occur at the producer's premises, are fossil-free and renewable.

Carbon dioxide emissions are calculated based on the combustion of the fuel, i.e. the part of the life cycle that Swedavia can influence.

Fossil-free airport operations by 2025

Since December 2025, all energy in the permanent or recurring ground-bound airport operations has been fossil-free.

The energy and fuels Swedavia sells at the airports are fossil-free. Vehicles that need a vehicle permit must run on fossil-free fuel such as electricity, HVO100 or biogas in order to obtain a permit. Operators with ground handling operations agreements and operating agreements have agreed that all energy used in the operations concerned must be of fossil-free origin. All electricity and heat comes from fossil-free sources, and all vehicles, machines and equipment are powered by electricity, HVO100, bioLPG or other fossil-free energy.

Swedavia would like to extend a big thank you to all the actors who have been part of this transition!

Fossil-free energy is monitored in operational audits and cooperation meetings, as well as through the reporting system Swemission, where actors with operational or ground handling agreements log in and register their energy use. The actor then receives a calculated climate footprint, which the actor can use for any further reporting.

A first version of the Swemission system will be commissioned in August. This page will then be updated with a user manual and a link to the system. Short information sessions (30 min) will be offered, where a short demo will be held and provide the opportunity to ask questions. (Note - The same information will be provided on these three occasions)

Please note that the reporting system is newly developed and will need to be improved during the year. But for this, we need to use and find areas for development. We are already aware that comfort cooling and electricity for vehicle charging are missing to provide a fully calculated carbon footprint.

Fossil-free ground transport by 2030

The next milestone in the work towards fossil-free airports is that transport to and from the airports will also take place fossil-free from 2030.

Swedavia's goal is that both passenger and goods transport to and from the airports will be carried out by vehicles powered by electricity, HVO100, biogas or other biofuels, instead of fossil fuels. Swedavia is working to analyse transport types at the various airports and the opportunities and challenges that exist and need to be addressed. Analyses are also carried out on what any cooperation agreements or requirements may look like.

Many players are already far ahead and what needs to be done varies depending on what the business looks like. We hope to achieve this through cooperation agreements and requirements in procurements, or by facilitating, inspiring and encouraging, for example, employees and travellers. As the conditions are different for different actors, dialogue and cooperation are key for us to jointly achieve the goal.

Unlike many other emission sources, transport is the sector where transition is technically and economically possible now, with access to electric vehicles and biofuels such as HVO100 and biogas.

Within Sweden's climate policy framework, one of the concrete sub-goals is that emissions from domestic transport (excluding domestic flights) should be reduced by at least 70% by 2030 compared to 2010. The sub-goal is in line with the Paris Agreement, the EU's climate law and Fit for 55.

In addition, all of Swedavia's airports are certified according to Airport Carbon Accreditation, where we have committed to reducing all of the airports' greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2050. Since ground transport to and from Swedavia's airports is a major source of emissions, Swedavia wants to reduce emissions from the transports we have some way at our disposal.
