EMC and Radio Spectrum Management

The EMC and radio spectrum management unit at Swedavia is responsible for ensuring a stable and interference-free radio environment at our airports. The work is about preventing and minimizing disturbances that can affect flight operational systems and daily airport operations.

What does EMC mean?

EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) means that electrical equipment and installations can work together without interfering with each other. This is crucial in an airport environment where many systems rely on reliable communication.

Today, many types of technology can affect the radio environment – not just radio transmitters. Even ordinary electrical equipment can contribute to interference by creating electromagnetic noise.

Examples of possible sources of interference

  • Illuminated signs
  • Lamps
  • Charging stations
  • Photovoltaic systems
  • Other electrical products

When installed, such equipment can adversely affect sensitive systems and critical communications.

Our work

EMC and radio spectrum management work to:

  • Assess how new installations affect existing systems
  • Prevent disruptions before they occur
  • Advise on EMC, radio communication and current regulations
  • Support the business in the event of disruptions
  • Ensure that regulatory requirements are met
Permits and EMC Review

To protect the airport's systems, permission from Swedavia is required to:

  • Installing or Using Radio Transmitters
  • Making changes to existing radio systems
  • Introducing equipment that can affect the radio environment

This applies throughout the airport area, including:

  • Terminal buildings
  • Areas around terminals
  • Airside and Landside

Processing
  • Processing time: 4–8 weeks
  • A fee is charged for investigation and processing
  • In some cases, a commercial license agreement is required

After your application has been submitted, you will receive feedback via email with information about:

  • Processing time
  • What information and documents are needed
